Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify the indications for the posterolateral approach for fixing ankle fractures, including fracture patterns and patient factors
  2. Understand the relevant anatomy and risk factors for the posterolateral approach to the ankle

Statement of Need/Description/or Summary of Gap Analysis

This video describes the indications for the posterolateral approach to the ankle, including a discussion about past and current trends on fixation of posterior malleolus fracture. The clinical significance discusses the anatomy of the ankle, including relevant landmarks and at risk structures during the approach. Also describes the anatomy of the syndesmosis and the effect of posterior malleolus fixation on ankle stability. Following watching this video, the learner will understand the anatomy of the posterolateral approach to the ankle, the fracture patterns it is indicated for, and potential fracture fixation strategies.

Instructional Format: This Orthopaedic Trauma Association Video CME activity consists of a video and an evaluation. Adjunct materials is provided on our OTA social media platforms.

Method of Participation: There are no fees for members to participate in this activity. Non-members must pay $10 per 0.5 credit hour. This package will be $30 total. To claim AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ credit, participants must read the front matter, watch the video, and complete an evaluation.
